Early in the project preparations the consortium partners realised that the vast project presence in Stockholm needed to be summarised in an easy and accessible way to the congress visitors. From there the idea of CVIS Live! was born. By linking all the dissemination activities and making sure that they are complementary, the outcome of the dissemination would be even larger than the sum of the separate parts.
To present the concept of CVIS Live! to the congress visitors, a 16-page brochure was developed, which may be downloaded here (2.1 MB). Below are some of the pages.
The front page presented a bird’s eye view over the congress centre and the surrounding area, highlighting the road for public road tour, the two areas in the exhibition centre where CVIS demonstrations were and the closed demonstration track. The logos of the five main financial/in-kind contributors to the ITS WC in Stockholm, and the European flag are shown.
Page 2 presents the full CVIS partner list, highlighting that the CVIS success has been built on dedicated work from all of the partners, as well as the fact that the project is supported by the European Commission.
Page 3 welcomes the reader with a short CVIS Story
Pages 4, 5, 6 and 7 present the different demonstration activities, timetable and where they can found
Pages 8 and 9 are a map to finding CVIS experiences
Page 10 aims at the press providing information about press briefing and demonstrations
Page 11 presents the concept of CVIS Application Innovation Contest
Page 12 summarises all CVIS related congress sessions
Page 13 starts looking into the future, mentioning CVIS activities at the InterTraffic 2010

CVIS Live! contest
In order to help visitors keep track of their CVIS experience in Stockholm and to encourage them to visit multiple stations/demonstrations, the consortium provided two prizes to be drawn amongst the visitors that have visited at least 5 out of 8 CVIS stations.
The benefit was reciprocal, the CVIS stations would get attract more visitors and the visitors would be able to win nice prizes.
The two prizes were: Visit to Trondheim cooperative test site (including flight, hotel stay and tailored visit to the Trondheim test site) and visit to Intertraffic at Amsterdam RAI (including 3 hotel nights and registration fee). Both of the prizes were closely related to CVIS and provided an additional opportunity to the winners to learn more about the project outcomes.
The prize winner of the “Trondheim test site visit” was Henrik Lind from Volvo Car Corporation, while the “Intertraffic” prize was won by Nick Hodges from Newcastle University.
CVIS Application Innovation Contest
The press release from CVIS on Application Innovation Contest presenting the winner and he concept of the competition gives a good summary of the contest: “Kristofer Lidstroem from Halmstad University in Sweden claimed the top prize in the final of the CVIS Application Innovation Contest 2009 which was held at the 16th ITS World Congress in Stockholm. The second prize was taken by Lodgon, Belgium and the two third prizes were given to Ygomi and CIT. The companies were awarded €20,000, €15,000 and €7,500 respectively.
Halmstad University took gold with a pedestrian safety system where the vehicle, on detecting unpredictable driver behaviour, informs the intelligent intersection. Both driver and pedestrian are warned either through the HMI displays in the car or on a mobile phone, or by altering traffic light phases. The driver behaviour is compared to reference models implemented using a potential field approach.
Lodgon’s silver winning Vehicle Social Networking (VSN) application is a community service where the vehicle interacts with the local environment and the public internet for exchanging personal and location relevant information within a community of peers. Rather than checking all issues by hand, the community can participate in identifying, verifying and commenting on the reported issues. The system would also allow for location advertising to be inserted with a relevant context.
The two winning applications come from companies not belonging to the CVIS consortium and show the range of applications CVIS is supporting beyond efficiency and support of mobility. The CVIS concept can be extended to safety and infotainment applications. Halmstad University’s pedestrian crossing warning could greatly increase safety for vulnerable users such as pedestrians and cyclists. Lodgon’s Vehicle Social Networking provides a community service based on vehicle to vehicle communications.
Ygomi/Connexis took the bronze prize for the evolving vehicle assistant, an info-mobility service where parking lots could be points of interest. The service aims at optimising the travel and mobility experience of a driver, evolving in an urban and sub-urban environment. CIT took the bronze prize to apply agent technology to cooperative systems and into the vehicular environment. The Commercial Vehicular Agent System (CVAS) is a framework which allows users in a vehicular environment to access location aware trust based services.
The CVIS Application Innovation Contest, which was launched in January 2009, aimed to assess the ability of companies external to the project to develop CVIS-compliant services. A large number of high-quality concepts were submitted. The best four submissions were invited to demonstrate their applications on the EC stand during the ITS World Congress in Stockholm.
After much deliberation the jury of CVIS experts form Daimler, Swedish Road Administration and Telecom Italy (figure 3) selected the finalists. The gold, silver and bronze applications were selected by the Congress visitors. 60 visitors took more than an hour time to study in detail the 4 applications to give their vote. The prizes were awarded in a ceremony presided by Juhani Jääskeläinen, Head of Transport, EC INFSO.
Interesting to mention is that the silver winning company Lodgon, has decided, thanks to the great interest in Stockholm, to develop their application into a real product. The product also features clients for CVIS-ready automotive devices, OSGi™ devices, JavaFX™ web and a mobile web client.
