CVIS Sub-projects

The CVIS project has broken down the many complex issues that need to be addressed to realise its vision by structuring its activities into four blocks of related sub-projects, three of which represent the "building blocks" for cooperative systems, i.e. the major scientific and technology research and development blocks:

The first two blocks work in parallel developing basic specifications for real working software and hardware, and then come together in a series of increasingly integrated test-beds, or reference implementations, that are then taken up and integrated for field trials at the CVIS test sites.

A distinction is made between coordination-oriented, technology-oriented, application-oriented and demonstration-oriented sub-projects:

  • Coordination-oriented sub-projects:

SP 1.1 - IP Management

The management of the consortium activities is shared between the IP Management and the CAG sub-projects: the technical management is carried out by the Core Architecture Group while the IP Management activities that operate under the guidance of the project Co-ordinator are the administrative support, financial management and dissemination. It is also within this sub-project's responsibilities to ensure the appropriate co-operation between all the sub-projects and with other related projects.

SP 1.2 - Core Architecture Group (CAG)
SP 1.3 - Deployment Enablers (DEPN)

SP 2.1 - Communications and networking (COMM)
SP 2.2 – Framework for Open Application Management (FOAM)
SP 2.3 – Positioning, Mapping and Location Referencing (POMA)

SP 3.1 - Urban cooperative system applications (CURB)
SP 3.2 - Interurban cooperative system applications (CINT)
SP 3.3 – Cooperative Fleet and Freight applications (CF&F)
SP 3.4 – Cooperative Monitoring (COMO)

Test Sites

A second important organisational entity within CVIS is that of the test site. Test sites are focused on testing the specifications that have been developed by the technology and application sub-projects. There are six test sites:

    1. France
    2. Germany
    3. Italy
    4. Netherlands-Belgium
    5. Sweden
    6. United Kingdom

In general, each application is trialled at several test sites, and each test site hosts several applications. This is deliberate and is intended to provide a more robust validation of the applications and a clear demonstration of the interoperability of technologies, vehicles and infrastructure installations.

The link between test sites and sub-projects is shown in the table below:
